St. Louis County has 1,064 lakes of 10 acres or more in Minnesota DNR hydrography, 759 of them named, covering 323,185 acres of water. The largest wholly in the county is Vermilion Lake at 39,272 acres; the deepest measured is Miller Pit West at 174 ft. Minnesota DNR has a measured maximum depth for 412 lakes here. The Census counts 612 square miles of water in the county, 9% of its area. Rainy Lake (44,591 acres on the Minnesota side), Lac la Croix (13,662 acres on the Minnesota side), Namakan Lake (11,755 acres on the Minnesota side) and 6 more are border waters shared with Ontario, Canada and Wisconsin; only the Minnesota side is counted here, and they are left out of the rankings below because their depth and clarity describe the whole lake.
