12 lakes in Cass County are 50 ft deep or more by Michigan DNR survey. Birch Lake is the deepest at 80 ft, then Shavehead Lake (70 ft), Hemlock Lake (70 ft) and Diamond Lake (64 ft). The depth of the other 67 named lakes has not been surveyed; where an older state estimate exists, the register gives it as an estimate.

Clarity is the depth at which a black-and-white Secchi disk disappears from view. Across 77 lakes with satellite readings, the middle value in Cass County is 10 ft. The clearest is Hutchens Lake at about 16 ft, then Lime Lakes (16 ft), Coverdale Lake (15 ft) and Hemlock Lake (15 ft). The least clear is Wildcat Lake at about 2 ft. Clarity is not a test for bacteria or algae toxins.

Michigan DNR has stocked 19 lakes in Cass County 327 times since 1979. Walleye went into 11 lakes: Barron Lake, Cable Lake, Dewey Lake, Diamond Lake, Donnell Lake, Eagle Lake, Fish Lake, Indian Lake, Long Lake, Porter Township, Magician Lake and Puterbaugh Lake. The most recent stocking was 46,637 walleye in Diamond Lake on 2 June 2026. Birch Lake, Harwood Lake and Hemlock Lake are designated trout lakes (Type B, Type C), with their own seasons and limits. Rivers and smaller waters stocked in the county: Brandywine Creek, Dowagiac Creek, Dowagiac River, Juno (Christiana) Lake, McKenzie Creek, Peavine Creek, Pokagon Creek and Rocky River.
